No matter how nice the rest of the property is, small closets can be a frustrating feature for renters. On top of a lack of storage space, the small spaces can be difficult to keep organized and clean.
Luckily, there are plenty of ways to make the most out of a small closet space. Here are some ways to keep even the tiniest of closets feeling bigger.
Invest in a Closet Organizer
Closet organizers are a great way to ensure renters are using their space efficiently without any guesswork. Sold as entire systems, the organizers provide both hanging and shelving space in a variety of shapes and sizes.
Wire closet organizers are the most budget friendly and will cost renters around $100 to $200. If renters prefer wood organizers, they should expect to pay $400 to $800.
Make the Most of Shelves
The right shelving can go a long way to make a closet seem bigger, especially in a smaller size walk-in closet. Renters should consider decluttering the floor by adding two or three tier shelves for their shoes under hanging clothes. Plus, most shelves will leave a few inches of space above the floor where small baskets or bins where other items can be stored.
If a rental doesn’t already include built-in shelves, adding wall shelves can also add storage. Shelf dividers are a good way to keep clothes categorized when kept together.
Maximize Hanging Space
Similar to shelves, adding more hanging space can make a closet feel bigger. Experts at retail chain Home Depot recommend organizing hanging clothes by length and installing hooks on any free wall space to hang jewelry, ties, scarves and accessories. Thin, velvet hangers can help fit more clothes on each hanging rack than regular plastic hangers, notes e-commerce company Wayfair.
Don’t Forget to Use the Door
Over-the-door organizers are a must when it comes to maximizing small closet space. These organizers should use the whole door from top to bottom. Along with shoe racks, door organizers can also hold socks, gloves, hats and other accessories. A pantry organizer can also be put on the outside of the closet door for even more storage.
Clear Out Unused Items
Even with the best organization tools, there is a limit to how much can fit in a small closet space. Renters should regularly go through their closets and get rid of or donate items they no longer use. Rotating out wardrobe items based on the season is another way to free up space and keep small closets free of unnecessary clutter. The out-of-season clothes can be kept in under-the-bed bins, unused luggage or even vacuum storage bags to free up space.
No matter the method, keeping a small closet organized can go a long way to making it feel and look larger than it is.
